The former Reds forward believes that those at Anfield should be looking to dip back into the summer transfer market for a proven goalscorer

Liverpool “need another world-class striker”, says Harry Kewell, with Jurgen Klopp being urged to continue an elaborate summer recruitment drive.

The Reds have already invested heavily during the current window, with midfield duo Naby Keita and Fabinho brought on board.

Alisson has also joined in a £65 million ($85m) deal, making the Brazilian the most expensive goalkeeper in history.

Liverpool are considered to be building towards a bright future, with the likes of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk also drafted in over the last 12 months, but Kewell feels a proven frontman is still required in order to challenge for the Premier League title.

The former Reds forward told the Daily Express: “Last season for Liverpool was excellent. That was a performance to definitely win something.

“But obviously with [Manchester] City having that exceptional season every other team has been overshadowed. But they’re definitely heading in the right direction.

“Their front three are phenomenal but I believe they need someone else as well. Just in case something happens to one of them.

“So they do need another world-class striker.”

While calling for further additions to be made at Anfield, Kewell concedes that Klopp has pieced together a squad which boasts plenty of promise.

He added: “It’s a big season for Liverpool.

“That had a fantastic season [in 2017-18] and have some quality players like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson.

“[Sadio] Mane, Salah and [Roberto] Firmino are excellent, while Jordan Henderson is turning into the player that we all hoped for. He’s getting better and better with age.”

Liverpool are currently in America on International Champions Cup duty, but are due to open the new Premier League season at home to West Ham on August 12.
