Minnesota will host seven duals, including against rival Iowa

The University of Minnesota Wrestling team today announced its 2014-15 schedule, which includes seven home duals highlighted by Oklahoma State and Iowa visiting the Twin Cities.

The team’s first meet will take place on Saturday, Nov. 8, when the Gopher grapplers head to Fargo, N.D., for the Bison Open. Minnesota claimed eight titles at the event last season.

The team’s dual debut will take place a week later with two road meets on Saturday, Nov. 15, first at Air Force at 11 a.m. (Central) and then at Wyoming that evening.

Minnesota will open its home schedule with back-to-back duals the following week. Grand Canyon University will visit the Sports Pavilion on Thursday, Nov. 20 for the first-ever matchup between the Gophers and the Antelopes. The following night, Minnesota will host Michigan State in the team’s Big Ten opener.

The reasons for wrestling fans to be thankful will stretch into the weekend after Thanksgiving, as Minnesota hosts perennial powerhouse Oklahoma State on Saturday, Nov. 29 in a dual pitting two of the nation’s elite programs head-to-head.

Following an early December trip to Las Vegas to compete in the Cliff Keen Invitational, the Gophers return home for their only home date in December, a mid-month dual against Northwestern (Thu., Dec. 18). The team will wrap up the 2014 calendar year with a trip out to the 50th state, where they’ll wrestle in the Hawaii Invitational on Tues., Dec. 30.

In the new year, the team will have seven Big Ten dual meets in a 30-day span, starting with Michigan at home (Fri., Jan. 9) and then the first-ever Big Ten battle with Rutgers in New Jersey two days later. Minnesota will then host Illinois (Sun., Jan. 18) before heading out to State College to take on the defending national champs from Penn State (Sun., Jan. 25).

Following that trip, Minnesota will return home to host archrival Iowa at Williams Arena. The date for this meet is still TBD – either Saturday, Jan. 31 or Sunday, Feb. 1. Stay tuned to GopherSports.com or follow Gopher Wrestling on Facebook or Twitter for the latest.

Minnesota’s Big Ten season will wrap up with a weekend road trip that takes the Gophers to Ohio State (Fri., Feb. 6) and Maryland (Sun., Feb. 8).

Following Big Ten season, Minnesota will defend its crown in the NWCA National Duals, starting on Sunday, Feb. 15 with the team’s second trip to Fargo, and concluding with two days of competition the following weekend in Iowa City. The Gophers have claimed the National Duals title the past three seasons.

Postseason competition will begin for Minnesota on Saturday, March 7 at the Big Ten Championships in Columbus, Ohio. The NCAA Championships are scheduled to begin on Thursday, March 19 in St. Louis, Mo.
